Lately, Manaslu Trek is one in the list of increasing number of tourists in Nepal each season. A large number of tourists are drowning in Manaslu every year. It is a remote and off-the-beaten-path compared to the other well-known teahouse treks in Nepal. Manaslu trek gained popularity since tea houses were built here in 2010. Prior to that, the hikers had to camp or an organised trek to visit this region.
The region was opened for tourist in 1995. When the government officially announced, open for hiking to the region trekkers this region this region only received 344 tourists in 1995. Due to the far proximity to the capital and civil war in the country, there was not a lot of tourist in between 1995 to 2006. A large number of tourists used to hike the Annapurna Circuit classical trail between this time. When the road construction started in 2005 as a part of the national development plan in Nepal, the classical trail to Annapurna circuit trail was completely destroyed without opening an alternative route for the hiker. This is when the hikers were looking for an alternative route in Nepal.
In 2010 local tea house were build in Manaslu, since then the number of tourists in this region went rocket high. Manaslu trek often compare with Annapurna circuit. However, they are quite not the same in terms of things to see, experiencing the local culture and the unique landscape. Trekking in this region is a privilege, as one of the restricted trekking areas in Nepal, hikers must be accompanied by a local guide and trek organized through the local agency in Nepal. When there was an earthquake in Nepal in 2015 Manaslu hiking area was only 12 miles from the first epic center Barpak Nepal. Over 60% of the local tea houses were buried to the ground. However, the local government was able to bring back Manaslu in business less than in 6-month time. In the year 2015, when there was an earthquake in this region only 2,288 tourists managed to visit Manaslu according to ACAP. Manaslu Conservation Area witnessed the arrival of 7,203 tourists, the highest since the area was opened to tourists in 1995.
For the first time in 1956, Japanese climber Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa made the first ascent of Mount Manaslu. Manaslu is also known as one of the killer mountains 8000m to climb: as of May 2008, there have been 297 ascents of Manaslu and 53 deaths was reported, making it "the 4th most dangerous 8000m peak, behind Annapurna, Nanga Parbat, and K2." However, in the recent year, the success-climbing rate is increasing compare to the 10 years before. The Year 2017 to18 is the largest number of a climber who scaled Mount Manaslu in the history. Based on ACAP report from January 2017 to until July 2018 a total 241 climber has scaled Mount Manaslu successfully. By far this is the largest number in the climbing history of Mount Manaslu.
