Under the proposed health care repeals, there may be an elimination or weakening of the Medicaid expansions, including sections that encourage individual and employer coverage. This may result in a huge loss of health coverage for many Americans. In terms of breastfeeding, although the provisions on Preventive Services would remain in most plans, those newly insured might not be able to have the same access to breastfeeding benefits like free breast pumps or lactation supports.
There is also an issue with regards to Breastfeeding Support in the Workplace. Because the repeals have not been specified women’s rights to breastfeeding in the workplace, many mothers may also lose their breastfeeding privileges at work if ever the new health care act is approved. As for funding breastfeeding programs, it is also expected that the reform bills may cancel the funding without other provisions to replace it.
However, at present, since none of the reforms have passed into national legislation, American mothers may still enjoy and benefit from a variety of breastfeeding support and services. According to the PPACA, “All new health care plans are required to cover certain preventive health services and screenings without cost-sharing. Breastfeeding is included in the preventive health services and thus you shouldn’t be paying additionally to get breastfeeding supplies and consultation.”
In addition, under the PPACA, health insurance companies need to cover breastfeeding support and supplies without cost-sharing or co-payment. This means that breastfeeding supplies, like your breast pumps, and support through a lactation consultant are going to be fully covered by the insurance plans and you do not need to make any additional payments to your health care providers.
