A growing population of adults now suffer from scoliosis – a spinal disorder that chiropractors can help effectively manage. Dr. Joseph Licitra, a Clifton, NJ chiropractor that has been treating scoliosis patients for over 35 years, says that regular adjustments can help improve pain, posture and function.

Scoliosis is a bend or curve in the spine where a healthy spine would be completely vertical. It begins as a minor bend in the spine that gradually progresses over a lifetime. A scoliosis diagnosis is made when the spine curves more than ten degrees to the right or left when a patient faces the examiner.

Dr. Licitra says, “If scoliosis is left unchecked, it can lead to serious consequences. Some symptoms can include back, neck and shoulder pain. In severe cases, scoliosis can even cause diminished lung and heart capacity and even physical disability.”

Scoliosis often develops during times of rapid development, particularly in children ages 10 to 12, but the disorder can also develop during adulthood as well. Misalignment can be a result of postural issues, degenerative diseases and traumatic accidents. Most cases, however, are known as “idiopathic”, which means that there is no known cause.

Dr. Licitra added that, “In regards to treatment, a chiropractor will first complete a thorough examination to determine the presence of scoliosis. If confirmed, a full health history report will be drawn up for the purpose of identifying any factors that could be contributing to it. A chiropractor would then be likely to perform specific spinal adjustments to reverse the body’s compensation and assist in the restoration process.”

Chiropractors can offer a non-invasive, gentle approach for treating those who suffer from scoliosis, as well as a myriad of other conditions such as back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain. Dr. Joseph Licitra’s office is open five days a week, including Saturdays. His practice currently accepts insurance plans such as Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), United HealthCare, and Aetna.
