Brain Implants: Using Advanced Neurology to Repair or Enhance our Brains
Currently the aims of brain computer interfaces are two-fold. The first is use our greater knowledge of the brain to create devices that can assist and repair brains that have received damage in some way. The second is to augment the ability of a brain to be able to do much more than it already can. Scientists have made great breakthroughs in neuroscience using implanted neurons in the brain to help repair vision, hearing and paralysis. The next step is to develop less invasive methods of achieving the same goals with an eye on producing implants that can enhance human ability to input and output information from the brain, to achieve things such as brain to brain communication and enhancing the brain's ability through connecting it to computers. The proponents of this technology see it as a necessary development in order for humans to keep pace with technologies such as AI.

Assisting brains that need repair is a key aim of neural implants and BCIs
In the last five years there have been some remarkable breakthroughs in medical implant technology that show that injuries and conditions which were previously thought to be unsolvable can now begin to be remedied. Whilst the technology is still relatively crude, it has established certain medical principles that will become common place, such as creating BCIs (brain computer interface). The principle is that computers can be used to map “thoughts” which are the electrical impulses in the brain to create actions and it is now better known how these impulses are used to trigger certain muscles and bodily processes. Therefore, implants can take these signals from the brain, process and learn their individual patterns in a computer and then map these to devices which can transfer the signal back into the body to cross a severed connection or to a robotic prosthetic device.

China-led study reveals ‘Greater Gondwana’ was 80% of Earth’s crust 500m years ago

Fragments of a long-disappeared ancient giant land mass have been discovered buried deep beneath parts of the modern continents that once formed it, according to an international team led by Chinese scientists. Published this month in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances, the discovery reveals that Gondwana – a land mass that dominated Earth some 500 million years ago – was much larger than previously believed. Crucially, the findings show how geological activity related to Gondwana...

AI: 10 days that changed the course of artificial intelligence

For years, the race to build ever more powerful artificial intelligence followed a well-worn Silicon Valley principle: move fast and break things. But in a series of cascading events over a 10-day stretch, the largest AI labs found themselves reeling as their own creations threatened to break humanity itself. An Anthropic researcher quit the firm, warning that the pace of AI development poses an existential threat, possibly within a decade. Another researcher at the firm said the odds of human...

Psychology Lesson of the Day by Armistead Maupin, 'The world changes in direct proportion to the number of people willing to be honest about their lives' offers timeless inspiring wisdom on purpose, meaning, success, perspective, optimism

Armistead Maupin’s iconic statement is a powerful reminder that honesty can have consequences far beyond the person who speaks. Telling the truth about one's life can create vulnerability, but it can also create recognition, compassion and connection. The world does not change simply because people reveal personal information; it changes when authentic stories help others question assumptions, understand different experiences and see common humanity.
