The New York Child Victims Act protects child victims of sexual abuse by the church, schools, as well as other organizations. Their right to bring a claim has been extended by the New York Legislature and Governor Cuomo through August 14, 2021.

The New York Child Victims Act protects child victims of sexual abuse by the church, teachers, administrators and others in schools, as well as other organizations. Their right to bring a claim has been extended by the New York Legislature and Governor Cuomo through August 14, 2021. Prior the NYCVA, the rights of tens of thousands had expired under a set of laws that did not protect young victims.
“Due to the corona virus and an overwhelming backlog of claims, many were unable to come forward by the initial deadline in August 2020. The extension through August 14, 2021 gives victims in New York the right to come forward and file a claim under the New York Child Victims Act. Otherwise, these victims of childhood sexual abuse would have their claims barred by the statute of limitations,” explains David Krangle, partner in Alonso Krangle LLP.
The extension of the New York Child Victims Act deadline allows victims to come forward through August 14, 2021. However, victims of sexual abuse should not wait.
“As we saw when the NYCVA originally passed, many were reluctant to come forward, did not know who to contact or delayed for other personal reasons. For thousands, they almost lost their right. They should not take that chance again, and should contact us, confidentially, to discuss their situation and their rights.”
