An Afghan official says two suicide bombers attacked a Shiite mosque in the western Herat province, killing one person and wounding seven others

KABUL, Afghanistan — Two suicide bombers attacked a Shiite mosque in Afghanistan's western Herat province on Sunday, killing one person and wounding seven others in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

Police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada said the toll may rise from Sunday's attack. He said both bombers tried to enter the mosque but one was shot dead by guards before making it inside.

IS claimed the attack in a brief statement carried by its Aamaq news agency. The Sunni extremist group has frequently targeted Afghanistan's Shiite minority, which it views as apostates.

An Islamic State suicide bomber targeted a group of Shiites marking the Persian new year in Afghanistan's capital last week, killing more than 30 people.

One faded photograph could prove Egypt’s first female pharaoh ruled like a king 5,000 years ago — and rewrite early Egyptian history

Researchers believe a digitally enhanced photograph of hieroglyphics could clarify Queen Meretneith's role in ancient Egypt. Discovered in the 1940s, the inscription may suggest she ruled as a king rather than merely as a regent. However, some Egyptologists dispute this interpretation, claiming it only references King Djer. The debate surrounding Meretneith could redefine women's political authority in ancient Egypt.
