Chinese pop stars publicly back Beijing on Hong Kong

Aug 19, 2019

HONG KONG — At least eight pop stars from mainland China and one each from Taiwan and Hong Kong are publicly stating their support for Beijing's one-China policy, eliciting a mixture of disappointment and understanding from fans. Many of the statements came after protesters opposed to Beijing's growing influence over semi-autonomous Hong Kong removed a Chinese flag and tossed it into Victoria Harbour earlier this month. Lay Zhang, Jackson Wang, Lai Kuan-lin and Victoria Song were among the K-pop singers who recently uploaded a Chinese flag and declared themselves as "one of 1.4 billion guardians of the Chinese flag" on...

The Latest: Organizers say 1.7 million at Hong Kong rally

Aug 19, 2019

HONG KONG — The Latest on protests in Hong Kong (all times local): 10:40 p.m. Organizers say at least 1.7 million people turned out for the latest pro-democracy rally in Hong Kong. Civil Human Rights Front organizer Jimmy Shan says the figure does not include those who were not able to make it to Victoria Park — where Sunday's protest march began — due to traffic constraints. The total turnout would make the rally larger than a massive march in June, when organizers estimated 2 million attended. Police have not yet released their crowd estimates, which are generally much lower....

The Latest: IS says it carried out attack on Kabul wedding

Aug 19, 2019

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Latest on the late-night suicide bombing that struck a wedding hall in the Afghan capital, Kabul (all times local): 3 p.m. The Islamic State group's affiliate in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the Kabul wedding blast that killed at least 63 on Saturday night. A statement by the militant group posted on an IS-linked website on Sunday says that a Pakistani IS fighter seeking martyrdom targeted a large Shiite gathering in Kabul. The IS affiliate claimed that after the suicide bombing, a car bomb was also detonated in the attack. Afghan officials say that nearly 200...

Tens of thousands flood Hong Kong park for new rally

Aug 19, 2019

HONG KONG — Heavy rain fell on tens of thousands of umbrella-ready protesters Sunday as they started marching from a packed park in central Hong Kong, where mass pro-democracy demonstrations have become a regular weekend activity. While recent rallies have been marked by violent clashes with police, organizers said they hoped Sunday's assembly would be peaceful. "We hope that there will not be any chaotic situations today," said organizer Bonnie Leung. "We hope we can show the world that Hong Kong people can be totally peaceful." Leung's group, the Civil Human Rights Front, has organized three massive marches in Hong...

Dozens dead or hurt in wedding party blast in Afghan capital

Aug 19, 2019

KABUL, Afghanistan — A suicide-bomb blast ripped through a wedding party on a busy Saturday night in Afghanistan's capital and dozens of people were killed or wounded, a government official said. More than 1,000 people had been invited, one witness said, as fears grew that it could be the deadliest attack in Kabul this year. Interior Ministry spokesman Nusrat Rahimi told The Associated Press the attacker set off explosives among the wedding participants. Both the Taliban and a local affiliate of the Islamic State group carry out bloody attacks in the capital. The blast occurred near the stage where musicians...
